LUMS Review: Inching Closer to a Failed State

You are screwed. Pakistan is screwed. It will get worse. The good people in Pakistan will be hurt. They will leave, at least the ones that can.

I blame your religion. Look what it has done for the "Land of the Pure". Note the difference with India. What you call "fundamentalism" is nothing more than what is found in the Quran and hadith. Of course, Muslims will never consider the effect of their religion on society. It is forbidden to question Islam because, as every Muslim knows, it is wonderful and perfect -- and so you have no freedom of speech. So then Muslims must blame somebody or something else for their problems (India, infidels, Israel, jews, Bush, America, colonialism, poverty, ignorance, etc., take your pick....).

And so nothing changes, except it gets worse. So then Pakistan becomes everybody's problem. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Here is my prediction: Within 2 years the radicals will control Pakistan (There is no reason to believe the radicals will be content with Swat only). They will enforce a Taliban-like sharia. The people of Pakistan will suffer, but specially the women. Even so, there will be broad support for this, because it is being done in the name of Islam. The real question is how this will effect India and Iran.... I don't have a clue. It is also certain that different factions among the radicals will fight and kill each other, always claiming that the others are not "real" Muslims practicing the 'pure' Islam.

PS: OH yes, by the way, good blog, good material here....

I have to say im incredibly saddened by the immature response offered by Jay Kactuz above. The response merely illustrates the kind of myopic thinking prevalent in the contemporary world. This is a reflection of, and creates further bigotry that is responsible for extreme behavior in the first place. It is naive, and inaccurate to reduce behaviors to 'religion'. Need I remind (Mr/Ms?) Kactuz, that the 'fundamentalist' movement did not originate in the muslim world at all, in fact it is linked with the protestant christianity. It is also rather simple to classify all muslims societies and peoples as part of one monolithic group- one that he seems to suggest is on the 'wrong path' anyways so to speak. Its like saying 'all brown people are the same' or all 'white people are the same'. Surely, living in the contemporary world of complex politics, driven by nationalist agendas and compelling globalizing forces, (Mr/Ms?) Kactuz possesses the sight to appreciate that?

The problem my friend Kactuz, is not with the intolerance in religion itself- for had you studied theology you'd be well aware no religion preaches that- but its with your own mindset that has clearly been a victim of popular rhetoric. It is not 'Islam' that is intolerant Im afraid, it is you.

Ediot ! its India who has done this for creating enviornments of protraying Pakistan as a failed state, needs extra vigilence on her borders with Pakistan and finding excuse for not sending troops to Afghanistan (the future grave yard of Indian army) as decided in the Indo-US pact of Strategic partnership
